Consortium Seeks to Build Life Sciences Talent Pipeline
The North Carolina Life Sciences Apprenticeship Consortium (NCLSAC) is comprised of life sciences companies that collaborate with academic institutions and nonprofit organizations to build awareness of training and career opportunities in life sciences.
Consortium company members implement and sponsor registered apprenticeship programs (RAPs) and provide funding for pre-apprenticeships. Registered apprenticeships are a time-tested strategy for recruiting, training, and retaining a competitive workforce.

Benefits of RAPs
RAPs are designed to meet the specific needs of life sciences companies while providing apprentices with structured, on-the-job learning, and related instruction. The benefits of RAPs to employers include:
- Customized training that ensures apprentices develop the right skills
- Increased productivity
- Reduced recruitment cost
- Increased employee engagement
The consortium supports company members by establishing work standards for registered apprenticeships, partnering with academic institutions, leading marketing efforts, and hosting recruiting events.

Federal Funding Promotes Awareness of Opportunities and Defrays Training Costs
Funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Build Back Better Regional Challenge for Accelerate NC-Life Sciences Manufacturing promotes training and job opportunities to high school graduates, military veterans and spouses, and members of North Carolina’s historically excluded populations.
A portion of this funding is being used to sponsor free pre-apprenticeship BioWork courses for 220 residents of North Carolina.
The map below shows the locations of the community colleges offering free BioWork training as part of the Accelerate NC Life Sciences Manufacturing initiative, as well as life sciences companies that have joined the NCLSAC.
